News Release and Public Information Announcement
Herrin City Library Closure, March 16- May 30, 2020:
Update: We hope to add modified services beginning the week of May 18, 2020. Modified services will include curb service for the pick up of books, dvds and other materials. The updated announcement for modified services will be made on May 13, 2020. The Herrin City Library has extended the closure of the library through May 30, 2020. Please check our library website (herrincitylibrary.org) for updates. A statewide shelter-in-place order began at 5 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 2020, and will last through May 30, 2020.
After considerable deliberation, the Herrin City Library has decided to close to the public to help slow the spread of the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19.) Closure in effect Monday, March 16 through May 30, 2020.
On March 13, 2020, Governor Pritzker mandated that all schools in the state be closed from March 17 until May 30, 2020, in an effort to curb the spread and impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus. While normally we would invite our school-aged children to come to the library in the event of an emergency closing, this is not the best course of action when trying to curb a contagious disease. Because containment works best when all organizations participate, many libraries and other cultural organizations will be closed for the same duration.
Here is what you need to know.
– The Herrin City Library will be closed to the public except as further outlined below. This includes any events hosted by third-party organizations.
– Overdue fines will not accrue while the library is closed. The library will not be accepting items returned during this period. The book drop is closed. Patrons are asked to keep their materials until our library reopens.
– Patrons should not bring materials to return. We are asking patrons to keep materials they currently have until our building reopens, No late fees! If materials are left at the book drop, fees could occur for lost or damaged items.
- Electronic Resources: We encourage our patrons to check out our many electronic resources that will continue to be available during the closure.
-E-books, eMagazines and eAudiobooks are always available online through our website and through free apps. Visit https://herrincitylibrary.org/catalog/digital-resources-ebooks-eaudiobooks-digital–magazines/ Please call the library if you have any questions or need help setting up your account, 618-942-6109.
Here are some ways you can help prevent the spread of the virus through the library and its materials:
- We will automatically renew all items. Remember that no Herrin City Library items will accrue fines March 16-May 30, 2020. We will renew items borrowed from other libraries if those libraries allow us to do so. Do not return your materials until after the closures have been lifted. You do not need to call to have your items renewed. We will automatically renew.
- If you have a tablet, a smart phone or want to use your computer, you can download items from RBDigital or Cloud Library, so you do not have to come to the library. See https://herrincitylibrary.org/catalog/digital-resources-ebooks-eaudiobooks-digital–magazines/ . This is available to Herrin City Library card holders only. If you have a card from a different library, you will need to contact them to find out what ebook and e-resource options they offer. Your card must not be expired. Please call the library if you need help setting these up: 618-942-6109.
- Refrain from eating while reading, and do not lick your fingers when you turn the pages of a book.
- Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently.
- Self-isolation is a key to minimizing risk to yourself and/or others.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this rapidly evolving health crisis. We are working to keep the public and the library staff as safe as possible. The Herrin City Library is continuing to monitor and adjust to this changing situation. Services available over the coming weeks are subject to change depending on what is needed to protect the health of our communities.
