The Harrison Family Bible Finds a New Home @ Herrin City Library
The Harrison Family Bible found a new home in the Linda Jennings Banks History Room at the Herrin City Library. The Harrison Bruce Historical Village on the campus of John A Logan College received The Harrison Family Bible in May, 2016 from the heirs of David Ruffin Harrison, one of the early settlers of Herrin’s Prairie and a community and business leader in the area in the mid to end of the 19th Century.
His heirs, including Jud and Gayle Etherton, South Carolina, Rebecca J. Wright, California and Ken and Annabel Bergman, IL and members of their families were visitors at The Village in May, for a funeral of a family member in Carbondale. They gathered at The Village for tours and to donate several important artifacts and pictures from The Harrison family.
The Harrison Bible which dates to 1867 will be placed in the Linda Jennings Banks History Room for safekeeping and preservation. It will be displayed with other Harrison documents at various times during the year. The vast majority of funding for the historical village was furnished by the Julia Harrison Bruce Foundation and the Fred G. Harrison Foundation. The Village was dedicated in April, 2012
Lead Docent at The Village, Cheryl Ranchino Trench, and Docents and members of The Herrin Area Historical Society, Vicki Blair, Rebecca Bostian, Marilyn DeTomasi, Barbara Jacobs and Carl Goodwin presented the Bible to Library Director, Susan Mullen, Librarian, Linda Jennings Banks, and Assistant Researcher, Lisa Carnaghi in the Library History Room Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016.
Susan Mullen said, ‘It is a wonderful treasure to add to our collection of Herrin history items. We are grateful to the Harrison heirs and to The Harrison Bruce Village for entrusting the Bible to our care.”
