Dr. Glenn Poshard will speak to the Herrin Area Historical Society at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 22, 2016, at the Herrin City Library. In his long and storied career Dr. Poshard most recently was the president of Southern Illinois University, but he has also been a coach, a history teacher, and a U.S. Congressman. In his talk he will recount humorous anecdotes from his legislative career, and he will address the importance of history.
He is a three-degree graduate of Southern, and he served in the Illinois State Senate from 1984 to 1988, when he was elected to Congress, where he served multiple terms. He ran for governor in 1998, when he was narrowly defeated by George Ryan. In January 2006 Poshard became president of Southern Illinois University, serving until his retirement in May 2014.
He and his wife, Jo, founded the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children in 1999, which has raised more than $100,000 annually for the care of abused children and victims of domestic abuse in southern Illinois.
