April is National Poetry month and the Herrin City Library is hosting a poetry contest. The contest is open to Southern Illinois residents. Entries will be judged in two divisions: Adult, 19 years & older & Youth, ages 18 & under.
Poems may be any desired format based on selected photos (See entry forms below.) Each poem must be typed and submitted with the entry form. Entry forms may be picked up at the Herrin City Library or downloaded below. Submission must have a title, written in English and be an original work of the entrant. Submissions may be returned in person, mailed to Herrin City Library, 120 N 13th Street, Herrin, IL 62948, or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org, but must be received no later than Saturday, April 14, 2018.
First, second and third place awards will be given for each division. Prizes are 1st place – $25, 2nd Place – $20, and 3rd place – $15. All entries are subject to publishing at the discretion of Susan Mullen, Library Director. Please make sure your poem is submitted with the corresponding entry form. Winners will be announced at our Family Fun Night on Thursday, April 26, 2018, 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Herrin City Library.
National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world with schools, publishers, libraries, booksellers, and poets celebrating poetry’s vital place in our culture.
