FRED HUFF SPEAKS TO HAHS Feb. 16
On Friday, February 16, 2018, at 2:00 p.m., Fred Huff will address the Herrin Area Historical Society at the Herrin City Library. He will talk about Saluki sports. He will principally focus on Herrin athletes who have gone on to play for SIU. This group includes Richard “Itchy” Jones, Jim Gualdoni, and Gloria Bonali.
A native of DuQuoin, Huff spent thirty-five years with SIU Athletics as Sports Information Director and Assistant Athletics Director. In 1971 Huff undertook a seven-year managerial role at the DuQuoin State Fair before returning to SIU as Assistant Athletics Director under Gale Sayers. During his tenure at SIU, he witnessed some of the school’s most memorable sports moments, including the 1967 Walt Frazier-led NIT championship men’s basketball team and the 1983 national championship football season.
His passion for Saluki athletics culminated in Saluki Sports History , 100 Years of Facts and Highlights, a formidable 416-page book that reflects Huff’s dedication and knowledge of SIU sports.
Huff has been honored by his hometown with the Citizen of the Year Award, and the Missouri Valley Conference bestowed upon him the Paul Morrison Award. In 2005 he received the Alumni Achievement Award for Distinguished Service from SIU.
Fred Huff’s presentation is part of HAHS’ Guest Lecture Series. Gordon Pruett is Program chair. The event is free and open to the public. HAHS welcomes new members.
